Bowl Solar

High efficiency sun following solar collector have never been easier. Do it yourself friendly. Low impact on visual environment. The Bowl Solar invention was perceived 2016 by Stefan Nyström, while trying to improve the Flat vacuum solar collector. Since much energy is lost when the angle between the collector and the sun is not optimal. Hence sun following capabilities was needed, which would in the flat vacuum panel example, require solar following technologies, which would add to the overall cost, which was nor desirable.

The need for DIY capability was dire, since shipping has big impact on the price for manufactured goods, and the best option is to set up low tech facilities, in the country where the technology is to be utilized.

Once built the volume increases dramatically and hence the freight cost, which would give less solar products for the dollar spent.

First out was attempt to utilize recycled glass jars, that is equipped with a small collector, and is after that, insulated by pumping the air out to near vacuum.

Cost of production would be high, so an increase in size was necessary, to slash the prices of the current vacuum tube technologies, which i consider to expensive and DIY unfriendly.

The shape on the picture above, seemed optimal, from the collector and price wise argument, however, since its a one off shape, that couldn’t be found in retail, something else had to be considered.

Thanks to IKEA, i found the solution, the had a glass bowl, mass produced already, which could be bought for low price, and in every store almost on global basis as i could check.

This is a 6 liter tempered salad bowl, that would be suitable to build efficient DIY solar collectors from. Its thickness would allow it to be vacuum insulated by pumping the air out. Efficiency would be high 87% conversion of energy from the sun.

The base plate is a standard 2400x1200mm plywood, which would be treated with epoxy, to withstand the elements 32 Bowls is placed on every plywood base and would provide 2 square meters sun exposed, sun following area. The heat sink inside is made of thin aluminum, which is spun on lathe, just like pots and pans can be manufactured, se video below.

Preferable is 0,2 mm aluminum, with aluminum tubes soldered unto the the heat sink. The base of the Solar Bowl is casted in concrete, to get an airtight durable cheap base for the collector. Concrete needs to be epoxy treated aswell to prevent cracks building up, and expanding concrete, as in non shrinking should be used to avoid to high stress to be built up to the glass.  Also the part of the glass that would be sunk into the concrete should be etched with acid, to get maximum strength of the seal.

One 2,4×1,2m unit filled with 32 Solar bowls, has a cost of production on DIY basis of 125 USD and in tropical climate 4,5Kw solar energy is collected by the hour, if converted to electrical energy  1,5KW per hour would be achievable with the low thermal displacement engine, which is still under construction.

Cost for such arrangement would be in the example of a 50 Kw plant would be 6000 USD and that’s is a cost per watt of 0,12 USD compared to electrovoltaic panels who would cost 2 dollar per watt on average, all equipment included. In totality this has lowered the price 16.66 times, compared by watt per dollar. Also the lifespan of the plant would be very long lasting, up to 100 Years, if quality concrete is used.

I still consider the flat vacuum solar panel to be cheaper, but that’s only try if its stationary and not sun following, im working on cheap sun following technologies, but since im unfunded, and considered voluntary based workload is immense, regarding to the many projects in the field of solar, aswell as other types of innovations, that i still have to put to many hours of unpaid work into.

The base plate is fitted to the ground with stainless steel rebar.

The near ground placement and the sturdy glass, would ensure storms and harsh weathers has very low to no impact on the plant.

Compared to the “old” vacuum tubes that brakes for no reason whatsoever, and has little to no sturdiness if hail or flying debris, comes into play. If a regular water heater is build with the Bowl solar technology, you can look forward to slash the price by 70%.

The bigger the bowl, the more optimum price manufacturing calculations could be achieved. In the picture below, is what i consider the optimal shape, size for the Bowl technology. But for countries with cheap labor, none of this would matter, since the overall cost of production of solar energy, would end up in fractions of the cost, spending money on degrading electrovoltaic panels, which energy cant be saved to be used during nighttime, which is readily available with the Low cost thermal battery, i invented to go along with the solar technologies i had in mind.

Since Solar collects a wider band of the incoming solar energy, solar voltaic can never compete, cause the hotter they get, the impact on performance gets worse, and degrades them heavily, if exposed to overheating for long times.

The above collector has same properties as of area of solar collection, as we can see the number of collectors has shrunk from 32 to 10, which would bring down manufacturing cost further, however the specialized equipment to mold the glass for this one, makes it impossible for small scale production, which is the goal i aim for when inventing any technology.

As of this i release the technology for free, for anyone to use, more details can of course be added to the technologies, but for this i cannot maintain at no cost operation.
